On Being Halcyon In Kal… 6 September 2016

For my late Uncle Denis, who passed away 10 years ago, for his loved ones, and for yours. Now, while we still have the time - i.e. now - we just have to "Be, as a page that aches for a word, which speaks on a theme that is timeless".

On Careers

Imagine a job "big enough for the spirit".

Roman Krznaric gave a talk on his book, How to Find Fulfilling Work, as part of the launch of The School of Life’s practical philosophy book series. Krznaric offered five essential ideas for career change, drawing on career advice from Leonardo da Vinci, Aristotle and a woman who gave herself the unusual 30th birthday present of trying out 30 different jobs in one year.

On Living

Theodore Zeldin's magnum opus teems with original and humane ideas, many having a direct influence upon the evolution of Halcyon.

Zeldin, whom I had the pleasure to meet in Oxford in 2008, says that "enough is known, enough has been written, about what divides people; my purpose is to investigate what they have in common". This is work worthy of a lifetime, perhaps of many people's lifetimes.

Quote 2789

The purpose that you wish to find in life, like a cure you seek, is not going to fall from the sky. ...I believe purpose is something for which one is responsible- it's not just divinely assigned- Michael J. Fox (born 1961)- Actor, activist

Quote 2784

Strange as it may seem today to say, the aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware. In this state of god-like awareness one sings- in this realm the world exists as poem. No why or wherefore, no direction, no goal, no striving, no evolving - Henry Miller http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/12/07/henry-miller-on-creat…

Quote 2783

Some time in the last fifty thousand years, with the invention of culture, the biological evolution of humans ceased and evolution became an epigenetic, cultural phenomenon... technology is the real skin of our species. Humanity, correctly seen in the context of the last five hundred years, is an extruder of technological material. We take in matter that has a low degree of organisation- we put it through mental filters, and we extrude jewelry, gospels, space shuttles. This is what we do. We are like coral animals embedded in a technological reef of extruded psychic objects - Terence McKenna
