On Sport

Ivan Fernandez Anaya

To understand what sport is - perhaps, should be - consider the story of Spanish runner Ivan Fernandez Anaya, who still receives attention for a race he lost back in December 2012.

El Pais explained how Anaya was in second place, some distance behind race leader Abel Mutai. As they entered the finishing straight, he saw the Kenyan mistakenly pull up about 10 metres before the finish, thinking he'd already crossed the line. Anaya quickly caught up with him, but instead of exploiting Mutai's mistake to speed past and claim victory, he stayed behind and, using gestures, guided the Kenyan to the line and let him cross first.

On Careers

Imagine a job "big enough for the spirit".

Roman Krznaric gave a talk on his book, How to Find Fulfilling Work, as part of the launch of The School of Life’s practical philosophy book series. Krznaric offered five essential ideas for career change, drawing on career advice from Leonardo da Vinci, Aristotle and a woman who gave herself the unusual 30th birthday present of trying out 30 different jobs in one year.

On Led Zeppelin

In February 2012 I had the pleasure of seeing Letz Zep in concert in Brussels. However, in December 2012, the surviving members of the genuine article - Led Zeppelin - went to Washington to receive laurels at the 35th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones sat watching from the balcony, as a series of performers paid tribute to the band.

"Spin me back down the years, and the days of my youth; draw the lace and black curtains and shut out the whole truth." To Cirque Royal in Brussels to see Jethro Tull. Another blast from my Edinburgh past (saw them at the Playhouse on my 19th birthday). Ian and the gang still in fine form; and he can still perch one leg on the other while giving it some serious welly on his flute!

On Pink Floyd

To Antwerp on 24 October 2012 to see Pink Floyd tribute band Brit Floyd. Classic stuff: from a trippy See Emily Play, through an exuberant Money, a suitably "adult" Great Gig In The Sky, the poignancy of Wish You Were Here/Shine On You Crazy Diamond (with photos of Syd flicking through the kaleidoscopic backdrop), and all building towards the hazy theatre of Comfortably Numb, which of course brought the house down.
