Halcyon In Kaleidoscope features irregular and fragmentary writings - on ideas and values, places and people - which evolve over time into mini essais, paying humble homage to the peerless founder of the genre. The kaleidoscope is Halcyon's prime metaphor, viewing the world through ever-moving lenses.

Quote 2384

Operationally, God is beginning to resemble not a ruler but the last fading smile of a cosmic Cheshire cat - Sir Julian Huxley

Quote 2383

Now, now my good man, this is no time for making enemies - Voltaire (on his deathbed, in response to a priest asking that he renounce Satan)

Quote 2382

Not only does science know why the tsunami happened, it can give precious hours of warning. If a small fraction of the tax breaks handed out to churches, mosques and synagogues had been diverted into an early warning system, tens of thousands of people, now dead, would have been moved to safety. Let's get up off our knees, stop cringing before bogeymen and virtual fathers, face reality, and help science to do something constructive about human suffering - Richard Dawkins

Quote 2381

My own mind is my own church - Tom Paine

Quote 2380

My country is the world, and my religion is to do good - Thomas Paine

Quote 2379

Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.- Thomas Jefferson

Quote 2377

It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg - Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), 3rd US President, Democrat

Quote 2375

In all ages of the world, priests have been the enemies of liberty - David Hume
