On What We Think
Halcyon In Kal… 31 December 2018

These pages highlight our founder Dominic's subjective views on the ever-changing range and scope of subjects that Halcyon focuses on.

This is less a blog than a set of irregularly updated and often fragmentary views - on ideas and values, places and people - evolving over time into mini essais which pay humble homage to the peerless founder of the genre. Our writing is provisional, always open to change as new thoughts and ideas emerge.

The kaleidoscope is Halcyon's prime metaphor, encouraging us to embrace change and to view issues through an ever-moving series of lenses.

What's Changing?- Growth

October 2018

  • Economic growth, international trade and global expansion present complex challenges, argued Chatham House. On the one hand, the global system of open trade has brought substantial and widespread benefits to many. On the other hand, such growth has led to dislocation in certain industries and has introduced new risks and uncertainties into the lives of many people, such as the concentration of wealth and the degradation of the air, land and oceans.

    On A Mundane Comedy
    The Divine Comedy
    Halcyon In Kal… 31 December 2018

These are working notes for a book to be published in early 2019. Please contact us with any questions about the evolving book.

In 2013, poet Niall O'Sullivan's The Mundane Comedy used Dante's terza rima to document a year of his life, detailing big current events, intimate everyday happenings and "the tired rope bridge of opinion that naturally forms between the two".  Touching and amusing in turns, O'Sullivan's poem is well worth dipping into on any day of his - or your - year. However, my ambition is somewhat different: firstly I have deliberately gone for the indefinite article and title my work A Divine Comedy, as while Dante (and who knows, if he is picked up by the right publisher, perhaps O'Sullivan too is for the ages.

    What's Changing? - Human Rights

    Human Rights

We are at the second crucial stage in the development of human rights thinking. The first was gaining widespread international recognition for the very idea of human rights - that has been more or less successful. The third will be achieving enforcement of human rights provisions, by bringing every dictator and oppressor to trial and punishing every violation of human rights. The current second stage is expanding the thin minimum meaning we attach to ideas of rights into a rich understanding of what those ideas imply about the human good - AC Grayling
