Halcyon In Kaleidoscope features irregular and fragmentary writings - on ideas and values, places and people - which evolve over time into mini essais, paying humble homage to the peerless founder of the genre. The kaleidoscope is Halcyon's prime metaphor, viewing the world through ever-moving lenses.

A Mundane Comedy is Dom Kelleher's new book, which will be published in 2025. The introduction is available here and further extracts will appear on this site and on social media in the coming months.

Values

Quote 2919

There is a growing legion of business people who are hungry to build something of enduring character on a set of values they can be proud of -- Jim Collins, "Built to Last"

Quote 2918

There is a crucial need for society and the world's political leaders to strengthen the role of values - such as love, respect, tolerance and creativity - and finance organisations that teach them. That could prevent or perhaps reverse the spread of hatred and violence originating from neglect and alienation - Ildi Trencsenyi, Budapest, letter to Time, 28/11/05

Quote 2917

There is a big change going on in the way people see the world: change in the concept of development, in the way people live together. But for this change to bear fruit, we need education on a global scale... Solutions will come when the world becomes educated about global values, the common values of its inhabitants and communities - Rigoberta Mench

Quote 2916

The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; and worship without sacrifice - Mahatma Gandhi

Quote 2915

The superior man understands what is right; the inferior man understands what will sell - Confucius

Quote 2914

The present system of global cooperation is not working sufficiently. [We need to] look at all issues on the global agenda in a systemic, integrated and strategic way. We have to rethink our values; we are living together in a global society with many different cultures. We have to redesign our processes; how do we deal with the issues and challenges on the global agenda? - Klaus Schwab, founder World Economic Forum, 2010

Quote 2913

The present historical juncture has been rightly called 'the democratic moment,' when human values are in the ascendant. It is now a generally accepted thesis that at the heart of the development thrust must be respect and concern for the individual - Samuel Insanally, President of the Forty-Eighth Session

Quote 2912

The loathsome behaviour of City boys and hedgies at the height of their success. It was the behaviour of people without culture and without any sense of their connection to other people. They were isolated within their own phenomenally narrow set of values. Such isolation breeds stupidity because judgment is discarded as it might threaten the gamblers' groupthink. Outsiders are mocked because they 'don't understand'. - Bryan Appleyard

Quote 2911

The individual pursuit of happiness as defined by consumer culture still absorbs much of our time and energy, or else the threat of being shut out of this pursuit through poverty, unemployment, incapacity galvanises our efforts . . . and yet the sense that there is something more presses in. Great numbers of people feel it: in moments of reflection about their life; in moments of relaxation in nature; in moments of bereavement and loss; and quite wildly and unpredictably - Charles Taylor

Quote 2910

The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who in time of great moral crises maintain their neutrality - Dante
