- In his book In the Swarm, Korean-born philosopher Byung-Chul Han wrote that, historically, respect required thoughtfulness to maintain interpersonal distance - not invasive overexposure, but restraint, allowing meaningful connection within cautious bounds. Respect once relied on carefully guarding interpersonal distance, governing interactions through restraint. This approach to interpersonal dignity now feels largely extinct as people broadcast intimate details and descriptions amid bids for external validation.

- Lashon hara, in Jewish religious law, means any form of speech or communication that may harm someone emotionally, financially, physically, or damage their reputation. It is forbidden to speak lashon hara, and it is considered to be a serious sin. It is forbidden to speak lashon hara even if it is true and it is forbidden to listen to lashon hara. If you hear lashon hara, you should reprimand the speaker or exit the conversation. Listening to lashon hara is seen as an even greater sin than speaking it. And, if you do hear lashon hara, you are forbidden to believe it. - Respect at work is among the biggest factors influencing job satisfaction, according to a Harvard Business Review study surveying nearly 20,000 employees. Over half of the employees said they don’t receive regular respect from leaders, and studies further suggest business leaders may also be unaware when respect isn’t reciprocated.

- Respect is shown in many different languages by following certain grammatical conventions, especially in referring to individuals.For instance, it is disrespectful to not use polite language and honorifics when speaking in Japanese with someone having a higher social status, while in China it is rude to call someone by their first name unless you have known them for a long period of time.
- In many indigenous societies, respect serves as an important concept valued in indigenous American culture. In addition to esteem or deference, respect is viewed as a moral value that teaches indigenous individuals about their culture. This moral value is treated as a process that influences participation in the community and also helps individuals develop and become integrated into their culture's community.
